What is Nephrology or a Nephrologist? |

A nephrologist is a physician who specializes in the field of Nephrology. A Nephrologist has completed an internal medicine residency and subsequently a fellowship in the specialty of nephrology. Nephrology is the study, diagnosis and treatment of kidney disorders. Nephrology primarily focuses on the progressive deterioration in kidney function called chronic kidney disease (CKD). CKD is broken down into stages from 1 to 5. The end stage of CKD (ESRD) coincides with the need for renal replacement therapy (dialysis or transplantation). Nephrology also deals with conditions such as kidney stones, blood or protein in the urine, electrolyte disorders and fluid management issues. Nephrologists additionally have a unique perspective and training in Hypertension. |

What is the difference between a Nephrologist and a Urologist? |

Nephrologists are physicians trained through the medical route and are the medical specialists in disorders of the kidney
Urologists are surgeons who act as the surgical specialists for disorders of the kidney and genitourinary system. |

Who is at risk for CKD? |
|
|
Anyone with diabetes mellitus, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, elevated body mass index, history of tobacco use, age greater than 60, or family history of CKD. |

How do you screen for CKD? |
|
|
Screening is simple. It only requires a simple blood test and urinalysis. |

Do you do blood work in the office? |
|
|
Yes. We have medical assistants who can draw blood in the office. A complete blood count (CBC) is done in the office. Other blood work is sent to commercial laboratories based upon preference and insurance bias. |

What are the office hours? |
|
|
- Monday and Wednesday 9 am - 7 pm
- Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 9 am - 5pm

How long is a typical wait to see a physician? |
|
|
Our aim is to see patients as soon as possible. We strive to fill new appointments within a week depending on patient preference and the particular physician availability. |

Occasionally serving as primary care givers, we are mainly consultants in the field of nephrology and hypertension. As consultants, our practice model revolves around building a strong partnership with the primary or referring physician. Through consultation and close communication, we advise the referring physician on how to best optimize your renal care using the clinical experience and expertise of specialists |
